Arwen, daughter of Elrond, is known as the Evenstar of her people. She is the true love of Aragorn and they are betrothed. She is not a true elf as her father is half-elven, though her mother was an elf. This means she has to choose whether to be immortal or not.

She first meets Frodo and friends just after the Ringwraiths' attack on Weathertop. She rescues the stricken Frodo and bears him on her swift steed, Asfaloth, towards Rivendell.

At the ford she staves off the advancing Nazgul by using her elven magic to call up the power of the river to wash them away.
